Vernier caliper reading and usage method

　　In the mechanical processing industry, the measuring tool that must be prepared for the first contact is undoubtedly the vernier caliper. It plays an indispensable role in daily production activities and is frequently used for accurate measurement of various sizes.

　　Vernier caliper is a measuring tool used to measure length, inner and outer diameters, and depth. A vernier caliper consists of a main ruler and a vernier attached to the main ruler that can slide. If viewed from the back, the cursor appears as a whole. There is a spring plate between the vernier and the ruler body, which uses the elastic force of the spring plate to make the vernier and ruler body close together. There is a fastening screw on the upper part of the cursor, which can fix the cursor at any position on the ruler. The main ruler is generally measured in millimeters, while the vernier caliper has 10, 20, or 50 divisions. Depending on the division, the vernier caliper can be divided into ten division vernier caliper, twenty division vernier caliper, fifty division vernier caliper, etc. The main ruler and vernier of a vernier caliper have two sets of movable measuring claws, namely an inner measuring claw and an outer measuring claw. The inner measuring claw is usually used to measure the inner diameter, while the outer measuring claw is usually used to measure the length and outer diameter.

　　◆ Precautions for Vernier Card Size Before Use

　　1. Wipe the reference end face and sliding parts with a small amount of lubricating oil

　　2. Move the ruler frame back and forth throughout the entire journey to confirm whether the sliding is smooth and whether there are any jamming or other issues

　　3. Clean the measuring surface, then make it fit and confirm the following content!

　　Outer measuring surface (outer card): When aligned with the light source, if no light is visible, it is qualified and can be used normally. When there are stains, debris, or burrs that cannot be fully adhered, sometimes light can be seen and need to be cleaned before use.

　　Inner measuring surface (inner card): It is normal to see only a small amount of light when aligned with the light source.

　　4. After completing the previous step of inspection, while closing the caliper to prevent light transmission, check if the caliper scale reference is aligned (the main ruler and auxiliary dimension 0 points are aligned), if the pointer of the gauge card is facing the 0 point, and if the digital caliper displays 0 (or resets to 0).

　　◆ Precautions for using vernier calipers

　　1. When reading the scale, please aim your gaze at the front and pay attention to the parallax.

　　The digital caliper can be ignored and the values can be read directly.

　　2. When measuring, use appropriate force to check. When measuring dimensions, if the measuring position of the workpiece allows, try to measure at the root of the measuring claw.

　　3. Please do not measure with the measuring surface tilted, as this may result in inaccurate measurements.

　　○ Standard vernier caliper reading method: alignment of the main ruler with the scale line value+alignment of the vernier ruler with the scale line value

　　○ Reading method with caliper: Align the main ruler with the engraved line degree value+dial value

　　○ Digital caliper reading method: directly read digital display values.

　　◆ Precautions after use

　　1. After use, confirm if there is any damage to each part and clean the entire area thoroughly. When used in places where water-soluble cutting oil is attached, clean and wipe dry the water. If not used for a long time, rust prevention treatment should be carried out.
　　2. Open the outer measuring claw by about 0.2-2mm without tightening the fastening screw for storage.

　　3. Place the caliper in a dedicated box and avoid storing it in a high temperature, high humidity, dusty, and oily place for a long time.
